About El Sol de la Costa

El Sol de la Costa was launched in 1997 by Warren Sharpe, a British-born journalist who worked for many years in the United States. He headed across the border into Mexico after leaving his job as features editor of the daily newspaper in Monterey, California. Arriving in Puerto Escondido aboard a battered bus that slowly wove its way through the Sierra Madre del Sur, he planned to stay a few months. He's still here to this day.

Warren sold El Sol de la Costa in January 2011 to a Canadian publishing company, Driftwood Publishing Ltd. Based on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, the company publishes a weekly community newspaper along with several magazines and websites. Representing Driftwood Publishing in Puerto Escondido is managing director Tony Richards, who began visiting here in 2005 after the late Jon de West introduced him to the town.

El Sol de la Costa is a monthly magazine published in both English and Spanish, and is distributed free through advertisers, hotels and other visitor accommodations. The magazine can also be viewed online.
